Back to School

Dear Friends and Supporters,
It has been nearly a year since Covid-19 struck the world and shut

down many businesses and institutions, including Gifts of Hope Community School. This has not deterred us in our mission to faithfully serve our school community outside Kakata, Liberia. Although the children were not in school for eight months, our teaching staff was providing materials and assignments to the students to help them to complete the 2019-2020 school year.

Prior to the students coming on December 1, our teachers came in for a workshop to prepare for the new year. The focus of the workshop was to answer questions, discuss curriculum, and to learn how to better manage the classroom and students. The workshop was very successful and teachers were eager to meet their new students.

On December 1, we were able to reopen school for the 2020-2021 school year with over 150 students. That number has grown to over 200 students as of today. Praise God! We opened school with an assembly to give God the glory and prepare the students for the new year. We asked God’s blessing on the school, on the staff, and on the students. The word of God was presented and the students were given basic instructions. Schedules and basic rules of behavior were reinforced. Covid-19 procedures were emphasized. After chapel and devotions, students received classroom orientation to prepare for the school year. The children are excited to be back in school learning and seeing their teachers and classmates. We started working with the students to see how well they have learned and retained their lessons from the 2019-2020 school year. We are working to reteach material that has been forgotten or not learned well. Once this process is completed, we will teach new material. Our December 15, 2020 school year will be scheduled a little differently this year due to time lost because of Covid. Our school year will go through the end of August 2021, at which time we plan to get back on the the usual scheduled school year, September – June.

God willing, we plan to build a 4th through 6th grade building this year. We are also in need of more furniture as we add a new class this year. Our temporary fence is disrepair and needs to be replaced with a more permanent structure. We covet your prayers and support as we go through our school year. May God bless you during this holiday season. My prayer is that you receive true joy as you celebrate the birth of our Lord on Christmas Day.

In Christ,
Harry Gorwor, Principal of GOH
