The Gorwors: Brief Family History

                     – by Harry S. Gorwor

The Lord has brought us a long way – through thick and thin – by His grace and abounding love. The Lord not only kept and blessed our union to this day, but also made us a channel of blessing in many ways. To Him alone be all the glory!

Sarah and I were wed in December 1997, and our marriage is blessed with four biological children, namely: Grace, Harry, Jr., Olive and Jochele. Besides our biological children, we were blessed to be guardians to five (5) children over the past twenty years.

Leaving myself out this time, let me share a little more about my wife, Sarah and our children.

Sarah

Sarah was born in mid 1970’s unto the union of Elder William Wreh and Mary Brown Wreh. Her father was a Pentecostal cleric and her mother was a Christian woman and housewife. Sarah was last of seven (7) children. Both parents are deceased.

Sarah was about completing her Junior High Education when the Liberia civil war struck. She, along with her parents, fled Monrovia into rural Liberia and stayed there until the war subsided in early 1991. Although the civil war continued up to 2003, and affected Sarah’s dream for higher education and career, she has over the years improved her literacy and obtained formal training in baking, food preservation, and catering. Sarah uses with her skills occasionally for catering weddings and church conferences.

In recent years, Sarah spends much of her time taking care of children and leading music and worship at our church. Between 2014 and 2016, Sarah provided care for over sixty (60) children at Alpha Daycare in Paynesville. She currently provides care for our children as well as over twenty (20) kids of Faith Community Church children ministry.

Sarah enjoys spending her leisure time listening to gospel music and walking in the early morning hours as an exercise.

Grace Gorwor

Grace, our first daughter, was born on October 6, 1998. Grace’s birth and early childhood were in the midst of serious humanitarian crisis, owing to the Liberian Civil War.

In such circumstance, growing up and getting education became difficult for this girl child. However, little Grace utilized her parents’ meager support and worked hard to complete high school in 2019.

With a dream of becoming a medical practitioner, Grace is currently studying nursing at Cuttington Junior College. Her long term goal is to become a medical doctor.

Grace goes to Faith Community Church, where she gives support in both music and children ministries. She loves reading and exploring new ideas.

Harry, Jr. (Young)

Harry was born on April 23, 2002 at ELWA Hospital, where his sister Grace was also born. He was born a year before the end of the civil war.

Harry is currently attending Booker Washington Institute (B.W.I), where he will complete his secondary education and pick up a trade in Building Construction. Harry’s dream is to become a civil engineer.

Harry plays the drum at church, and he is an affective member of the youth ministry. He likes to play basketball and go joking on weekends.

Olive Gorwor

Olive was born on September 20, 2008 at Duport Road Health Center, which is a government hospital in Paynesville. Olive is now in 6th grade at Emmaculate Catholic School in Paynesville. Olive has received three awards for academic excellence from 3 institutions.

Olive is a member of the children’s Bible Club and choir. She likes reading and storytelling.

Jochele

Our last daughter, Jochele was born on July 17, 2011 at Benson Hospital in Paynesville. Her name Jochele was derived from the name of our two good American friends (Jodi and Michele). This was done in recognition of their close tie to our family and their care for Sarah as she bore that pregnancy under difficult circumstances.

Jochele is now in the 4th grade at the same school with her sister Olive. She is very studious and has been an honor-roll student nearly every period test. Despite occasional asthma attacks, Jochele is generally hardworking at school and home. She loves being in church, singing in the children’s choir, and reading.
